How to order online

Whether clothing, computers, cosmetics or household items - a lot can now be ordered online. Comfortably from home using your own computer or mobile with tablets or smartphones, you save yourself the need to go to the shop and possibly search for a parking space or transport. But how does such an online shopping actually work?

Start shopping

as with normal shopping, the selection of the product comes first online. First, you look for the desired article on the website of an online retailer. Usually, you get a selection list first. By clicking on a product or offer, the desired article can be viewed more closely and the purchasing and shipping details can also be checked. Next, the selected goods must be moved to the shopping cart. This is usually done using the "Add to Cart" button.

Manage to purchase

The shopping cart can be thought of like a virtual shopping cart, in which you can put goods in and take them out again, just like with real shopping. If you click on the symbol, which often has the shape of a shopping cart or a shopping bag, you get an overview of all goods that are already in the shopping cart.

If the desired product is in the virtual shopping cart, additional goods can be viewed and purchased from the same portal or internet retailer. This means that the first or another order is not lost. Beside or under the shopping cart symbol you can usually see how many products are in the "cart". If you want to pay or call up an intermediate status, you can do this by clicking on the "shopping cart" or "view my orders" or similar formulations. The page that now opens shows the number of previous purchases, but there is still the option to continue shopping. The latter is usually done again using a button labeled "Continue shopping" or a similar text. You can also remove products from the shopping cart.

Carry out the purchase

If you want to complete your purchases, it is necessary to "checkout". This is done as when you continue shopping via a button. For the processing of the purchase, several steps are necessary, starting with the "Proceed to checkout".

First, you have to register at the online shop. In order to assign the goods to the right person and send them to the right address, personal data is requested and saved here: name, address and email address must be entered by default, this so-called mandatory information is often marked with an asterisk (*). In shops that do not use asterisks for labeling, you can simply click on the "Send" or "Registration" button to fill in the blank registration form. The mandatory fields are now marked in red as incorrectly filled boxes. Exactly these fields have to be filled in and then the button to send must be pressed again. Dealers are also happy to request additional data, such as the date of birth and the telephone number, but they do not have to be specified.

If you shop online, you must also choose the payment method. There are many different options for payment: prepayment, invoice, direct debit, credit card or online payment service. Here you should be careful and consider which payment method you prefer. If you pay in advance, for example, you only get the goods when the money has arrived at the provider, whether you take this risk is worth considering in advance. The safest payment method is payment on account. Bavarian Radio has published an interesting article on the different methods.

When all the data has been entered, the online shop offers a complete overview of the purchase. Here you should check the shopping cart and the prices again: Are all goods listed? Is the number of individual articles correct? Are the costs clear and understandable? Are all fees and a shipping date shown?

As the penultimate step, the general terms and conditions (GTC) and the instructions on revocation must be confirmed. This is done by clicking on a box, in which a check is then automatically placed. Without this step or this confirmation, the purchase cannot be processed. The cancellation policy often comes after the purchase by email. When checking the boxes, you should be careful not to order an unwanted newsletter. Some online shops indicate that the customer agrees to the terms and conditions by clicking on the "purchase button" instead of the checkmark.

Finally, you have to order the goods for a fee. A valid purchase contract is only concluded when you click on the "Order button" marked accordingly. Many retailers subsequently send a confirmation email, which often includes the shipping date. In this way, the customer finds out when and often by whom the package is delivered. Some providers write additional emails about the shipping status of the order, for example, whether it has left the mail-order business or - for larger packages - whether it is already on its way to the carrier. As soon as the package arrives, the product should be unpacked and checked: is the garment too small or does it have defects? If this is the case, you must exercise the right of withdrawal Make use and return the goods.
